DAY 1: Meeting in Edinburgh airport & travelling to the Isle of Skye

We will meet in the morning of the first day of the workshop at Edinburgh airport (a short tram ride from the city centre). After a short briefing, we will hit the road north towards Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

DAY 2: Ferry to the Isle of Harris

Begin your day with an early departure from Uig on the Isle of Skye. This isn’t just a journey; it’s a scenic adventure across the sea. Enjoy the unique vantage point as Skye gradually fades into the distance, offering breath-taking views of its rugged cliffs.

As we sail towards the Isle of Harris, the distinctive landscapes of the Hebrides come into view, promising exceptional seascapes. Keep your camera ready, as the ferry ride itself provides photographic opportunities. Soon after our arrival on Harris, we will take a short break to check in our hotel for the next few days and venture out to start exploring the area and shoot the sunset.

DAY 2-7: Photographing Lewis & Harris

Waking up on Harris, we will discover the island with fresh eyes, photographing the unique hues and colours of dawn.

Based in Tarbert, with a central location that allows us to explore the most beautiful spots of the islands, we’ll capture breathtaking landscapes, from the iconic beaches of Luskentyre to the ancient standing stones of Callanish, the sea stacks of Mangersta, the marshes of Northton, Reef beach, and many other fantastic beaches.

Every day will be full of opportunity to improve your photography skills, learn new techniques, and embrace the natural beauty of these remarkable islands. Whether it’s the golden hour light or the ever-changing weather, you’ll be constantly inspired to create stunning images, sharing those unique moments with a group of enthusiasts photographers.

DAY 8: Photographing Lewis & Harris

After ferrying back to the the Isle of Skye late afternoon on the 7th day, photographing the last views of the Hebridean coast from the ferry, we will stay a night in a hotel before driving back to Edinburgh through the scenic Scottish highlands on our last day.

Frequently asked questions

Any digital camera that has a manual mode will be suitable for this workshop. I recommend the use of an SLR or a hybrid camera as well as a tripod in order to obtain better results. I will send you a full list of essential and recommended equipment before the workshop

Participants need to be able to walk independently, but most of the photo spots are within a few hundred yards from where we park, and do not require a high level of fitness. Terrain might include walking on tracks and some rocky ground on cliffs and beaches. If necessary, alternatives might be available if you cannot follow the group, depending on each spot. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact me to discuss your needs

Depending on the day’s itinerary, meals will be taken at the hotel, in a pub, restaurant, or will be a packed meal. Why a packed meal? My priority is that we take full advantage of the locations we visit. Often, the best light for landscape photography is at the end of the day, around 30 minutes before and after sunset. There is nothing more frustrating than being in the right place but missing the best photo because we have to leave the spot for a meal reservation. Depending on the sunrise and sunset times on the dates of the workshop, we will have a packed meal on location in order to be on site and ready in the right place AND at the right time

Cancellation by the participant 90 days or more before the start of the workshop:
Loss of deposit amount only but refund of balance if it has already been paid by the participant. If your place is subsequently filled, we might offer to transfer the deposit towards any other available workshop within the subsequent 12 months (administration fees applicable, see terms and conditions).

Cancellation by the participant less than 90 days before the start of the workshop:
No refund. Loss of the full amount.
A transfer of the full amount to another workshop in the next 12 months may be possible should we (or you) find someone to fill the space. Any price difference will be charged to you (administration fees applicable, see terms and conditions).

Cancellation of the workshop by Jonathan Genevaux:
I will confirm the workshop by email as soon as a minimum of 5 participants have booked their spot and paid the deposit. In the event that I have to cancel a workshop before departure, all participants will of course be fully refunded (deposit and balance) and no fees will be applied.

My workshops are held in small groups of 4 to 7 people maximum to ensure that everyone is comfortable during the trip, and that I can provide the most individual tuition for each participant. I also value a small size group to limit our environmental footprint on the spots we will be visiting.

Accommodation will be provided in hotels in Tarbert or Stornaway, either in a shared twin room or a private double room depending on your booking preferences. Despite a busy schedule, there will be times for relaxing (or editing!) at the hotel. Some of the early sunrises might be optional allowing for participants to have a lie in, depending on the weather conditions and the final itinerary

Group tuition will be provided both on location and during down time at the hotel. There will be plenty of opportunities to look at our images from the past few days, analyse them together and even do some editing. It will also be an opportunity for me to share my knowledge on themes such as:

  • Analysis of weather forecasts for our next photo outing
  • Mastery of planning tools for landscape photography
  • Long exposures and using filters
  • Post-processing for landscape photography
  • Etc

Each participating photographer is welcome to be joined by a non-photographer friend or family. However, the itinerary is designed to maximise photography opportunities, which involves leaving the hotel before sunrise and sometimes coming back after sunset. Unfortunately, the itinerary cannot be changed to accommodate any specific needs of nonphotographers, and they will be asked to join the group on the majority of photo outings, unless they are optional.

Participants à un voyage en Ecosse. Séjour en Ecosse.
